KMC has no plan on the cards to merge community schools

Kathmandu: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has shared the plan of not merging community schools immediately.

KMC made it clear that it didn't have plans to merge the community schools in the city at the moment.

There are currently 89 community schools in the KMC. Among them, 59 are secondary schools while the number of institutional schools stands at 504.

The KMC is mulling to upscale all these schools running in the city, said Sitaram Koirala, Chief of the Education Department at the KMC.

Koirala said, 'Our main objective is to increase the number of students in the schools having lesser number of students, beautify infrastructures in the schools, provided with human resources and other resources to further enhance the quality of education in those schools.'

There has been growing fascination towards community schools lately, he viewed, adding that if the students continue to enroll in the community in these ratios, the KMC might have to run community schools on its own.

Earlier, the KMC had been considering mergers among those community schools having inadequate numbers of students. Koirala, at present, ruled out the possibility of a merger.

The KMC has allocated Rs. 50 million for the beautification of the community schools in the city while the overall budget allocated by the KMC for the education sector is over Rs. 1.3 billion in the current fiscal year, it was shared.
